I posted about this developing drought about 2 weeks ago and it is now growing and getting worse with the lack of any rainfall
Here is the whole country, just look at how much of the country is in some kind of drought, well over 50% but im focused on the NORTHEAST
We are now going from very dry to moderate drought, 2 weeks ago most of the area was just in the yellow, the orange was confined to eastern Long Island now its expanding NW ward and now all of NYC, Long Island, Massachusetts and into Delaware and Maryland and even into extreme south NJ and this data is old, it’s from April 3rd but now lets look at the chart
2 weeks ago, 42.27 of the Northeast was in the yellow, as of last week 64% of the NE was in the yellow so 21-22% increase in 1 week and the moderate drought (orange) 2 weeks ago about 4% of the NE was in the orange and last week about 10% was in the orange and once this weeks data comes out well those numbers will increase as we have seen no rain in the last 10 days
Red flag warning and fire weather watches have been flying and there’s been brush fires everywhere from New York state to South NJ , Connecticut and today a big one on Long Island. Most have been small so far but there was a big one in the Catskills on Friday into Saturday where some houses were burnt down and a big one in South Jersey in the Pine Barrens on Friday and again a big one on Long island where the doppler radar is actually picking up the smoke
See all that Pink? Thats all red flag warnings for elevated fire danger due to drought and wind. Theres been a lot of wind lately with a NAO block and persistent upper low over SE Canada.
So we have a drought that is expanding and getting worse, starting to get pretty nasty fires and really I don’t see much relief in site, no sign of any real soakers or many systems period, besides some real weak ones this week and again this weekend with a slight chance of a shower with each one.
