The active weather pattern we have been in will continue , as another major storm system is expected to impact the eastern half of the United states Thursday and Friday .
Until then we well finally get a break in the rain for Wednesday and most of Thursday with temperatures near normal , highs in the 40s lows in the mid 20s to mid 30s
The disturbance that will eventually form into this big storm is currently over the desert SW riding along the jet stream, but we see the presence of a ridge just off the SE US coast , meanwhile with a trough in the center of the country, and the sub tropical jet being pushed NW from the southeast ridge , both the subtropical and polar jet stream will phase and this disturbance will turn into a strong storm system over the southern Plains , and turn northeast , making a run towards the eastern Great Lakes
We see by tomorrow afternoon as the storm gets stronger, a precip shield will rapidly expand, there will be enough cold air on the west side to produce a major winter storm from Kansas through Wisconsin Thursday night through Friday night
As for us , we will be on the east side of the track, and we will get the associated and very powerful cold front , a windblown heavy rainstorm is expected late Thursday night through Friday afternoon. The trough with this system will turn negatively tilted as it hits a bit of a blocking the north Atlantic, this ill stream in Atlantic moisture from the southeast and slow down the storm.
In general, 0.50 -2 inches of rain is expected, least over southern NJ more as you head north , gusty southeast winds around 15-25 mph with higher gusts to 35 can be expected ahead of the front, behind the storm, winds will turn northwest and increase to 25-40 mph with higher gusts up to 50 possible along the coast.
Some back-end snow showers are possible from Friday night through Saturday as the storm cuts off and stalls over the Northeast US, along with a major lake effect snow outbreak.
Much colder air will rush in Friday night as well, marking the start of a much colder weather pattern through Christmas week, highs in the 30s area wide, lows in the 20s area wide , even some upper teens possible in the higher elevations. Those who “cancelling ” winter were just silly, as the true cold air is coming in just in time for the REAL start of winter
