While the impacts from this coastal storm are clearly missing New York City and northern portions of the forecast area, southern portions like South NJ/SE PA are getting hit and getting hit pretty hard today by heavy rainfall
As the coastal storm drifted north overnight, it kicked out the dry air we were dealing with yesterday which limited rainfall for just about everyone east of the Delaware river, this in turn has led to a stream of Atlantic moisture streaming into Southern NJ and training from east to west through SE PA , many areas in SE PA have anywhere from 4-6 inches of rain with a lot of flooding issues and more is on the way, southern NJ while still below expectations because of yesterdays lack of rain is making up for it today , at least somewhat .
Right now the low is centered just to the SE of the Delmarva, this is as far north as it will get before drifting east-southeast over the next 24-48 hrs , so basically where its raining now it will continue through the day, where it’s not raining, don’t expect much, although considering the dry air is being scoured out scattered showers are becoming more likely for areas like NYC/Central NJ AND PERHAPS Long Island , and as an area of lifting east of Atlantic city moves north we could see increase in showers over NNJ/NYC/LI , this will likely not even come close to the 1/2-2 inches I forecasted for this area but don’t be surprised to see at least some rain/drizzle around the NYC metro, if the area of rain/lifting comes north we could maybe squeeze out a few heavier showers but that will come down to now casting. Some of this could move towards the Lehigh Valley, NE PA as well, As of now very little rain to no is expected north of NYC
We can see above that whatever dry air that was over NJ/NYC/LI is gone , its likely too late to get anything too significant for this area though has the heavy rain has established itself now, but you see that blue on the map? That’s an area of lifting/moisture whichi is lifiting north and will likely lead to the development of scattered showers and perhaps more widespread depending on just how far north it makes it.
But a steady rain is likely for Southern NJ/Philly metro through SE and Central PA though the day ,we could add another 1-2 inches on top of whatever has fallen on these areas already so flooding is becoming a big concern especially over SE PA where they had a big plume of rain come through yesterday/last night and now another one today
Starting tonight the impacts from this storm will begin to dwindle , but slowly so steady rain for who ever is getting it will turn into more showery weather through tonight then turn into isolated to scattered showers by tomorrow , for NYC area any rain showers that we do squeeze out today will come to a quick end later tonight as the low moves back to the southeast.
Minor to locally moderate Coastal flooding along the southern NJ coast and Delaware/MD coast during high tide will remain a threat as gusty east winds continue but the winds will begin to diminish tonight though tomorrow so the coastal flood threat will also some to an end tomorrow likely
